Long wait for the new Toyota Fortuner 2016 has come to an end, as the Japanese carmaker rolled out the premium SUV in the Indian market. While prices of the petrol variants range from Rs 25.92 lakh to Rs 27.61 lakh, the diesel trims have been priced from Rs 27.52 to Rs 31.12 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). In this price range, the new Toyota SUV will go up against the Ford Endeavour, Hyundai Santa Fe and the Chevrolet Trailblazer. The new-gen Fortuner comes in a total of six variants – 4×2 MT, 4×2 AT, 4×2 MT, 4×2 AT, 4×4 MT and 4×4 AT. Interestingly, the new Toyota Fortuner is the only SUV in its league to offer a petrol option to buyers.
Engine options for the Toyota Fortuner 2016 model are – all-new 177bhp, 2.8-litre GD diesel and a 2.7-litre, 4-cylinder petrol. Both the powertrains have been borrowed from Innova Crysta. The petrol mill is available with the 4×2 MT & 4×2 AT variants, and the diesel motor comes with 4×2 MT, 4×2 AT, 4×4 MT, 4×4 AT models. The 4WD system is exclusively offered on the top-spec diesel models, and a 6-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters is an optional offering across all variants. The manual transmission is a 6-speed unit.
The all-new Toyota Fortuner is a complete departure from its predecessor and is underpinned by the new TNGA platform. The new architecture has helped shed weight on the SUV, while also improving the ride and handling of the model. The styling is a lot more urban, moving away from the butch appeal, with the SUV boasting of sharp lines, slender headlamps with LED projector lights and LED DRLs. Toyota Fortuner 2016 Interior
The interiors are all new. This feels just so premium and upmarket. The quality wasn’t ever bad on the Fortuner, just that the feel of the materials wasn’t appealing. The new steering wheel feels good to grip, there are twin dials on the instrument cluster. The centre console is simple made up a touchscreen system with AC controls, vents and shift on the go for 4×4 variants. In terms of features, there is reverse camera, bluetooth connectivity, maps, push start and stop, leather upholstery, bi-beam headlamps and LEDs.
In terms of space, there is no compromise. The front row has large seat and the space is just perfect. Driver’s seat has electric adjustment. The second row has good space, comfortable seating however the head room is a bit tight. These seats slide and recline and there are AC vents on the roof. The third row, well if the front seats are moved ahead, there is decent knee room. The head room too is just fine. With all the rows raised, there isn’t much space in the boot. However, the third row folds flat as the seats
move on the side. There is no electrically folding for these seats. The tail gate is electric.

In terms of safety, there are seven airbags and ABS. It has hill assist control and descent assist control. Then there is vehicle stability control too. The new Fortuner 2016 has also received a full safety rating from ANCAP.

The next generation Fortuner 2016 gets a new family of ‘GD’ engines developed by Toyota. There is a 2.8 litre diesel producing 177 bhp power and 450 Nm torque amd a 2.7 L petrol that makes 166 PS and 245 Nm. Underpinning the SUV is a brand new ladder frame chassis. The diesel engine comes mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox along with a four wheel drive system as an option. Transmission options for the petrol Fortuner include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. Petrol variants are not available with a four wheel drive system
