PEOPLE ANXIOUS TO KNOW ABOUT JAYALALITHAA’S HEALTH CONDITION, MADRAS HC SAYS

CHENNAI: The Madras high court on Tuesday asked Tamil Nadu additional advocate general to get instructions from the state government with regard to the health condition of chief minister J Jayalalithaa who has been undergoing treatment in Apollo Hospitals in Chennai since September 22.

People are anxious to know about the health condition of the chief minister as some information is already in public domain, a division bench orally observed when a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by social activist K R ‘Traffic’ Ramaswamy came up for hearing. Ramaswamy wanted to know the ‘real facts’ surrounding the chief minister’s illness and treatment being given to her.

He told the bench that the PIL had not been listed for hearing though it got numbered on Monday morning itself. He sought urgent hearing of the case.

Additional advocate general C Manishankar, however, said there was no urgency in the issue, more so because the hospital had been issuing medical bulletins daily.

To this, the division bench said the court was not inclined to pass any adverse order in the matter. However, the additional advocate general could obtain government’s instructions with regard to the issues raised in the PIL.

In his petition, Ramasamy had sought to know whether the chief minister was conscious and in good health condition to take important decisions, and to hold discussions with ministers and officials.

The PIL claimed that in some parts of the state, politicians and local rowdies were forcing closure of shops. It said people were apprehensive about public order due to rumours about the chief minister’s health.

Citizens should know the real status, and doubts could be dispelled if photographs or videos of the chief minister in action, handling day-to-day affairs of the state, were released, Ramasamy said.

He said the hospital’s statements had not given real picture of the disease as well as the treatment being given to the chief minister
