More than the film, it’s the role that excited me: Dhanush, on his Hollywood debut

Dhanush is on a new high after signing his first Hollywood film.

Dhanush

The actor is currently shooting in Pollachi near Coimbatore for his film Kodi, directed by Durai Senthilkumar, in which he plays a typical rural politician.

he actor is one of the most sought after stars in the Tamil film industry, as he has a guarantee at the box-office. The trade buzz is that Kodi (Flag) has been picked up by leading producer and distributor Madhan for a whopping Rs 33 Crores. It is the highest price ever paid for a Dhanush film. The next release of Dhanush will be Rail, directed by Prabhu Solomon, in which he plays a pantry boy on a super-fast express train between Chennai and New Delhi.

Dhanush is very careful about the kind of film he does and chooses his roles only after hearing the entire script. He has an image as a boy next door, and not that of a larger than life action hero, which most of his competitors actors have. In an earlier interview the star remarked: “I want to do different kind of films, which have some realism within the commercial format.”

Sources close to Dhanush reveal that he wants to be known as an international actor of substance, and that is why he grabbed the Hollywood offer. He always wants to excel and explore new frontiers. Take for example his production company Wunderbar Films, one of the leading production houses in Tamil cinema, known for making quality path-breaking films like Kaaka Muttai and now Visaranai.

Dhanush explains why he took up the Hollywood film, ” I am very excited by this opportunity to work in a full length Hollywood film — The Extraordinary Journey Of the Fakir Who Got Trapped In The Ikea Cupboard — for the first time. More than debuting as an actor in Hollywood, it was the role that excited me. The director, Marjane Satrapi, felt I would be apt for this role and I feel there are many facets I can explore for this character.”

The film is based on a novel and relates to the pilgrimage of a con man from India to an IKEA store in Paris, which then turns into a philosophical odyssey. The film will follow his journey from New Delhi to Paris where he falls in love with a woman and accidentally gets deported along with a band of African refugees to the far corners of Europe against his will.

Dhanush will complete all work on Kodi by middle of March and then start preparing for his Hollywood film, for which shoot starts in the first week of June. Dhanush concludes saying. “I thank my fans and media for constantly standing by me and pushing me to explore new endeavours and challenges all the time”.
