An assistant professor in the department of history at the Women’s College in BHU, allegedly committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan at her home in Badi Gaibi area here on Sunday.
Police recovered a suicide note from the room of deceased Swasti Pandey in which she had written about being in distress after her would-be groom refused to marry her just days ahead of their wedding.
Swasti, 31, had also expressed concern about the agony her family members had been going through. The family members have filed a case of abetment of suicide at the Bhelupur police station against an ‘unknown’ person on Monday.

The incident took place around 4:30 pm at Swasti’s residence where she lived with other members of her and her uncle’s family. Most of the members of her family had gone to Jharkhand to attend a wedding. Only her father, Ashok Pandey, and sister were at home at the time of incident.
Swasti’s family said her marriage was fixed with an engineer working at the Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) here.
The call details of her phone revealed that she had a long conversation with the person before she took the extreme step. The family alleged that the would-be-groom refused to marry even though most of the preparations were through, causing a lot of distress to Swasti.
